Original Thai Papaya Salad
Som Tam papaya salad (Thai: ส้มตำ) is one of the most popular dish in Thailand. Papaya salad is a spicy refreshing sweet and sour salad and low in fat and calories. Som Tam Thai Ingredients for a delicious Papaya Salad
- 200g green raw papaya strands. Always choose a papaya who is really firm. Press the Papaya with your thumb – she should not yield easily.
- 5x Cherry tomatoes or 2 small tomatoes
- 4x Thai chili peppers
- 1x tablespoon dried shrimp
- 2x tablespoons Thai fish sauce
- 1x medium clove garlic, peeled
- 50g / 2-3 yardlong green bean / snake beans
- 1x tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 1x tablespoon palm sugar
- 2x tablespoons roasted peanuts (unsweetened)
You can find green papaya in Asian markets and stores. First, You have to peel the papaya. Then you have to shred the papaya with a julienne shredder tool or a mandolin slicer or a papaya shredder.
Don’t use the white immature seeds inside the papaya.

Preperation: step-by-step
1. Peel the papaya and scoop out the inside. Clean with water and then cut with a papaya shredder or slicer into long strips.
2. Cut the yardlong snake beans into small pieces of about inch. Cut Cherry tomatoes in half or cut regular tomatoes into small pieces.
3. Put the garlic cloves and chili peppers in a mortar and crush with a wooden pestle. Add half of the roasted peanuts and crush as well.
4. Add the tomatoes and squeeze out the juice. But not totally crush tomatoes. Add fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar.
5. Add the papaya strips and crush slightly with a wooden pestle and then mix gently with a long spoon.
6. Again season with fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar. Then add the second half of the peanuts admit. Finished.
7. Portion out on a plate and top with the peanuts.

"Som Tam" Som Tam preparation tips
Som Tam is an individual dish. You can vary the recipe.
If you don’t like peanuts you can omit them.
Instead of lime you can use citron.
If you are a vegetarian/ vegan you can omit the dried shrimps. Use soy sauce or salt for fish sauce.
Instead of palm sugar you can use normal sugar.
As main course you can eat Som Tam with sticky rice.
